The Importance of Evolving Your Personal Brand

The Importance of Evolving Your Personal Brand

A strong brand is invaluable, especially as the gig economy continues to grow and competition in the workforce and workplace become fierce. Not to mention navigating the constant bombardment of distractions and noise.

I am staunch proponent of having and owning a personal brand. Owning your personal brand puts you in control of your narrative. It is a representation of what you stand for, a presentation of who you are professionally and personally, and it is your message to tell and share.

Authenticity is very important. Do not fake who you are as a person. When you do, people will sense it.

As Maya Angelou stated, people do not remember what you said or did, but they will remember how you made them feel. That feeling shows up in your actions, communication, and follow-through. When it is consistent or inconsistent, you are informing others of what to expect as part of your brand promise.

Building or optimizing your personal brand is not only about showcasing yourself, but also allowing others to see you as the only solution to their problems, the go-to person to have on their team, and an expert.

Ask yourself: What is the experience people are currently having with you? What would you like for people who interact with you to experience? You can speculate on the experience or you can reality-test it by asking others. Getting real, raw feedback is invaluable. The information gleaned is one way to measure and benchmark your current state while developing a plan for your future state.

Standing out, offering something different, and delivering an experience are critical aspects of evolving your personal brand. It is important to spend the time investing in researching, defining, and building your brand. After all, your personal brand represents your values, skills, and energy.

Your values are your essence. How you operationalize your values in your brand is key to remaining authentic and true to yourself. Collectively, it is your skill set plus the experience and knowledge that you bring to the table. This is developed and cultivated over time.

A compelling brand helps to connect all the pieces and tell a strong story. Your brand represents a promise, your integrity, and perceptions of how others see and experience you. Do not treat your brand as a one-night show, meaning you reviewed and tweaked once and it is complete. It takes lots of nurturing.

Change is constant. Remaining stagnant will make you irrelevant very quickly. The ROI on your brand will depend upon the amount of work, time, and energy you put in and your willingness to do the work to keep it relevant over time.

Just like in business, you have to embrace change and figure out ways to evolve, remain relevant, and deliver an experience. Dedicate time to grow and nurture your personal brand. When it is prioritized, it will show up powerfully.
