Not so long ago, a mentor told me that the all-women “mentoring circle” that I met with once a month for drinks after work was a bad idea and I should stop the gatherings. It was a bad idea because it separated me -- it separated me from the male majority. And, standing out was not helpful, at least not for women. Women must blend in not only to fit in but to move forward and up in the company structure.   The words felt like a slap in the face. My mentor was not only female but she also was the executive sponsor of our women’s network. I disagreed with her then and I disagree with her now more than ever.
