Meera Kaul embodies the essence of role-model woman entrepreneur. Through her homonymous donor foundation, she sponsors financial investment and social support to countless women.

Kaul’s corporate experience has sharpened her expertise and leadership assessment. In her view, men tend to be more competitive in their businesses, whereas women, making up half of the workforce, are driven by a need for achievement and independence. Yet only a few make it up the organizational ladder. Although women are better listeners, gender biases still fault us as being “too nice,” and therefore unable to prioritize work versus family. It is actually no surprise, that women own the majority of businesses related to healthcare and social assistance.

As the economic clout of women-owned firms continues to rise, Kaul takes on the task of breaking some leadership myths.

It is often said that in order to lead, you need management skills. Not necessarily; managing and leading are distinct responsibilities and therefore each requires its own skillset to succeed. Management is strategy, and leadership is passion; one is head-driven the other is heart-fueled.

Kaul sets ground- rules for a revised corporate game.

1.Be influential: your position within the organization does not make you influential. It’s your leadership skills and your influence within that role.

2.Be effective: success is within reach. Studies show that women entrepreneurs can be more effective than male entrepreneurs because they have to work twice as hard for recognition.

3.Be a learner. Have a daily discipline of growth in to build your personal leadership skill set. Take action. See obstacles as opportunities. Leadership requires building several intangible facets of personality.

4.Plan for success: plan for every possible outcome. Manage to the downside. Plan more than you act. Understand the costs of commitment before you make decisions that affect the team.

5.Be in Power: Being a leader is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t. Have strong character.

6.Get Trusted: You build trust by showing people you are able to deliver what is expected of you. Be honest within your environment. Confess your failures so you have the chance to make up for your mistakes.

7.Gain Respect: Be true to who you are and demand that same level of honesty from the people surrounding you. Make them winners and part of your vision, sharing the reward as a team. It might take effort and time, but it’s a long-term project worth investing yourself into.

8.Use your womanly intuition; it’s a gift to see things that others don’t foresee. It’s a measuring skill allowing you to assess a problem, as well as to zero in on solutions.

9.Attract the right people into your enterprise: know what type of team you want to be working with, the qualities you seek, the talent and vision you want to share with them. Bear in mind the customary characteristics related to demographics, values and experience. Most importantly, keep track of the number of people. You don’t need that many cooks in a kitchen.

10.Connect; Communication is the essential asset to establish your leadership. Heart always comes before hand. When you achieve a level of openness around you with your employees, your competitors and clients, you will receive a genuine rapport that will truly set you apart.

11.Negotiate: a common myth has us believing that negotiating is confrontation, when it really isn’t. Don’t be afraid to navigate through your options to demand what you think you deserve or what you want; never take no for an answer.

12.Leadership competencies: break the “men vs women” barrier. Develop a strategic perspective that goes beyond the gender bias, look at technical and professional expertise, and see how each person, regardless of their gender, can contribute to your overall professional success.
