When I finished graduate school in the spring of 1990, a cancelled engagement curtailed my plans to relocate from Washington, DC to San Diego. I needed a Plan B.A Georgetown University classmate and his wife, both former University of Chicago undergrads, had been enthusiastic boosters of that Midwestern city during the course of our MBA studies. I decided to try my hand in the job market of the Third Coast, looking to make it my new home. With a handful of friends in the Windy City who generously offered crash pads, I responded to newspaper want ads, religiously read Crain’s Chicago Business, and drummed up as many informational interviews as possible.
