Support From Your Squad: DaKenya Douglas

Stepping outside your comfort zone is never easy. With countless cheers from her Squad, DaKenya was inspired to open up and speak her mind.

Why did you decide to join a Squad?

I hesitated to join a Squad as I was in the middle of a lot of projects and professional development activities. I signed up very close to the final date because I was drawn to the idea of making connections with people outside my circle of friends and colleagues. I was particularly attracted to the way Ellevate described putting the Squads together by using my goals, current position, and proximity to other members in my Chapter. All this to help build connections which would facilitate better conversations.

I was nervous about the Hot Seat, but I made it a goal for 2018 to step outside of my comfort zone, to network, and to continue to seek professional development opportunities. The Squad experience aligned with those goals.

What have you learned from your Squads experience?

I was first up in the Hot Seat and we were all new to the process, but my Squad showed up and gave me great strategies. Sharing my problems doesn't come naturally for me; I am more inclined to listen to others and give advice. My Squad has taught me that opening up can lead to supportive exchanges of information and can help me work through my concerns. I have learned that there is power in having a Squad to be able to share with and learn from.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about joining a Squad?

Join, be present, be committed and enjoy the ride. If you are fully engaged, it will be a great learning experience and you'll walk away with more connections and a group of people who will continue to support you even after the 12-weeks is over.
