On November 17th in New York, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights will present its annual Ripple of Hope Gala. We are enormously proud to be honoring George Clooney for his humanitarian efforts around the world. Kennedy family members and celebrity guests will also join us in paying tribute to Robert Smith and Marc Spilker, who show us how we “find fulfillment in the good we can do together,” as Robert Kennedy urged.
Always a wonderful evening – poignant, entertaining and inspiring – its benefits stretch far beyond the few hours we enjoy with celebrities, sponsors and honorees. The gala raises millions to ensure that the vital work of the RFK Center continues – the human rights and social justice work that is Robert Kennedy’s legacy and our ongoing mission.
By participating in our event, you will stand for something extraordinary. You will represent communities in Haiti still struggling to re-build, but which have not yet seen pledged funds to do so. You will give voice to the women and children of Zimbabwe, just as our 2009 Laureate Maogdongha Malangu does each day with her peaceful protests and education efforts. You will support the farm workers of New York State and Florida – still battling modern day slavery conditions. You will bring to life the stories of human rights struggles by opening the pages of Speak Truth to Power for thousands of students globally, and you will nourish Aminatou Haidar whose 30 day hunger strike drew the world’s attention to the stateless citizens of Western Sahara. You will advocate for our country’s at-risk youth to ensure they have the tools to flourish as contributing, active members of society.
With a 40-year track record of defending rights and effecting positive change through our Human Rights, Speak Truth to Power, Book and Journalism, Juvenile Justice and Compass programs, there is much to celebrate, but the work is not finished.
