The 85 Broads Washington, DC Chapter will be hosting an outdoor Yoga on the Mall event to benefit Girls on the Run.

This event is open to the public and is for all yoga enthusiasts. No registration or sign-up is required. The event is free for all participants. However, there is a suggested donation of $5 which will directly benefit the Girls on the Run – DC scholarship program which affords underprivileged girls the opportunity to participate each season. Donations to Girls on the Run can be made online through the Girls on the Run website at www.gotrdc.org or on the day of the event.

Girls on the Run of Washington, D.C. (GOTR-DC) has collaborated with 85 Broads DC for this event to celebrate the empowering dynamic of both organizations. As a group of diverse women leaders who work in finance, business, academia, government, media, and a wide range of other industries, 85 Broads DC is hosting this event to support the mission of the Girls on the Run program which empowers young girls, ages 8-14, for a lifetime for self-respect and healthy living.

Yoga on the Mall will be a way for these two organizations to come together and celebrate the strengths of girls and women. Participants of all ages are encouraged to attend. This event will begin at 9am and will last approximately one hour. Participants should plan to bring their own yoga mat. The yoga practice session will be led by a local yoga teacher and will accommodate all levels.

In addition to fundraising for GOTR-DC scholarships, this event also serves to promote the upcoming Girls on the Run – DC 5K. On June 5, 2011, GOTR-DC will host their spring 5K Run/Celebration, the culmination of a 12-week program currently under way at public, public charter, parochial and independent schools as well as community sites throughout D.C.

The 5K event is open to the public and will be held at American University and starts at 10:00 am EST with pre-race activities starting at 8:45 am EST. Registration for the New Balance Girls on the Run 5K is now available at http://www.gotrdc.org.

RSVP: Please send RSVP’s for the event to 85BroadsDC@gmail.com

About Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, character development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. Our mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Girls on the Run – DC is an independent council of Girls on the Run International, founded in 1996, by Molly Barker, a visionary, Ironman triathlete. Today, there are nearly 170 locations across the U.S. & Canada, with new locations added each year. Girls on the Run® combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) event with healthy living education. We use exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls discover the confidence they need in the critical pre-teen years and beyond.
