Please join the Washington, DC Chapter of 85 Broads “Estate Planning 101,” an informative seminar from one of our own attorney members, Ruth Siegel Alpert, Esq.
The presentation will outline what estate planning is and why it is critical for you to have a plan in place. Traditionally, estate planning is the branch of law whereby a person’s property and estate are arranged (or rearranged) through the laws of wills, taxes, insurance, property and trusts. This allows for the maximum benefit of all laws while carrying out the individual’s wishes for the disposition of their property upon their death.
As Ruth focuses on client estate planning, her perspective goes far beyond the traditional preparation of documents for the administration of assets and minimization of taxes when clients are gone. Her focus is on helping clients maximize control over their personal and financial lives during their lifetimes. Besides being an attorney, Ruth is an adult daughter who has personally dealt with elderly parents and their end-of-life issues, and family members with special needs. As such, Ruth personally understands and can relate to many of the challenges her clients face related to money, businesses, jobs, health and/or relationships.
Through the estate planning process, she guides all of her clients – whether they be single, married, living alone or with other(s) – in planning for their future by drafting powers of attorney, health care directives and wills. On an as-needed basis, trusts are also drafted to ensure that assets are used most efficiently and effectively to support the people, institutions, and goals that are most important for her clients, and, if appropriate, avoiding probate, reducing taxes and avoiding the loss of government benefits.
A member of 85 Broads, Ruth owns Alpert Law Offices, LLC and is an attorney practicing in Maryland and Washington, D.C. She is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the US Court of Appeals, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the US District Court for District of Columbia, Court of Appeals of Maryland and US District Court of District of Maryland. Ruth received her Juris Doctorate from American University’s Washington College of Law and her Master’s in Psychology from George Washington University.
