For over 100 years, the intense feud between the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) put even the Sox/Cubs rivalry to shame. But in July 2007, after a one-hundred-seventeen-day multibillion-dollar bidding war, a six-month-long Department of Justice investigation, a bomb threat, a media circus, and the consumption of countless T-bones, a CME/CBOT merger finally happened.
85 Broads member and Zero-Sum Game author Erika S. Olson was a managing director at CBOT during that tumultuous time, and at the signing event she’ll discuss how she went about writing the book. She’ll also explain how and why the very same people in her story are now helping the U.S. government attempt to prevent another financial crisis.
With more exchange mergers making headlines and a battle for the NYSE brewing, there couldn’t be a more appropriate time to discuss the storied history of Chicago’s futures exchanges and the powerful role they play in the world today. Hope to see you on the 22nd!
