“Opportunities in the New Business Landscape: A Time for Innovation”

A discussion with Chandran Nair,
Founder & CEO of Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT)

The financial crisis has awakened the world to the risks arising from our unsustainable ways. But it can also be an exciting time for innovation and re-invention for those that are willing to understand and accept these harsh realities and with it, the need for dramatic change. We will explore the limits of our former model of economic growth and the lead up to this current breaking point, where we must now find strategies to rise to the challenge.

The talk will focus on these challenges, the culture of denial which has brought us to this point, the opportunities to reshape the business landscape as well as what it would take for companies as well as individuals to thrive in this new business landscape environment.

What roles are there for individuals who are seeking to break out of traditional career paths and find ways to carve out unique and meaningful paths? How will corporations need to change to adapt to these new ways, to stimulate creativity and reward innovation?

We will also explore:
- The creation of social enterprises beyond notions of philanthropy
- New methods of financing
- Investing and scaling up technologies which “do more with less”
- Industries of the future, in sectors such as agriculture, food safety, water conservation, energy efficiency and housing
- New businesses in wellness through recreation and leisure

CHANDRAN NAIR Founder & CEO Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT)

Chandran Nair is a true internationalist, having lived and worked in Asia, Europe and Africa. His Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT) is an Asian first: an independent social venture think tank dedicated to advancing understanding of key issues and challenges of globalisation in Asia – the role of business in society, governance and ethics, and leadership development. Before founding GIFT in 2004 he built Asia’s leading environmental consultancy, ERM. He lectures energetically, earning a reputation for insightful observation on geo-political realities and a refreshing perspective. Beyond speaking, he seeks practical, long-term solutions through his innovative Global Young Leaders Programme.

Mr. Nair has also advised the Taiwan and Hong Kong government, devising a new approach that gives the public a bigger role in key policy making decisions and also sustainable development. Mr. Nair has written several articles on these issues in the Financial Times, the South China Morning Post and YaleGlobal Online.

Mr Nair is a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business, running a course, “Leading in Asia for the Future”, as part of the HKUST MBA programme.
