On target tips - excerpt from Forbes; Why You Should Run Your Business Like a Non-Profit, by Dan Ehrenkrantz
#1 Focus on the Mission First - Then the Money
Nonprofits need to generate revenue to fulfill their mission, and just like a successful business - must recognize how their service fills a need in the world. A company’s social values create the cornerstone of its appeal to all constituencies: customers, employees, shareholders. In the process, just like a good nonprofit, it reaps the same benefits: public admiration, motivated and dedicated employees, and satisfaction from doing good in the world.
#2 Treat Employees Like Your Best Volunteers
Daniel Pink, in his bestselling book Drive, tells us that money is a motivator, but that autonomy, mastery, and purpose are at least as powerful. Autonomy gives people a great deal of latitude in determining how they will complete their tasks. Mastery allows them to keep getting better at something meaningful. Purpose gives everyone a reason to work beyond self-interest.
#3 Treat Customers Like Donors – They Have a Choice
Like nonprofits, businesses need to nurture ongoing relationships with their customers. Our local philanthropic leaders thank their relationships often. Successful for-profit companies and nonprofits alike share interesting company news, such as advances in energy efficiency or new technology breakthroughs, and embrace how customer loyalty helped make it possible.
