Every week a new influx of foreign technical specialists and entrepreneurs arrive in Northern California to make their mark.
While these talented people quickly begin buying real estate, building businesses and making connections, most of them remain blissfully and often dangerously unaware of the numerous tax and legal cross-border issues that could complicate achieving their business and personal goals.
Withers has over a hundred years’ experience in this field. We have advised successful people and their families for generations. Our experience has taught us that planning today can greatly improve the odds that the entrepreneur and his family can protect his or her wealth over time, and can fulfill his or her philanthropic objectives in a long-term and tax efficient way.
Over the coming months, our San Francisco office will be running a series of workshops to discuss a number of issues confronting this new generation of wealth creators and some of the solutions that can be employed to meet the needs of both domestic, and particularly, the international entrepreneur.
As well as examining tax, commercial and philanthropic issues, we will look at pre-arrival and post-arrival issues for those non-US individuals who wish to remain in the United States and some planning options for those who may wish to return home or simply may wish to move to another US state, or settle some of their businesses there.

Our first workshop will cover:

• Pre-arrival—getting status right before touch down

• Protecting and preserving wealth (or giving it away tax efficiently)

• Investing intelligently in US real estate

• Expensive hobbies—buying art tax efficiently
