What: With song and speech “Lady Sings the Blues” will celebrate and explore music and history in a thought-provoking and entertaining evening to honor Women’s History Month.
Who: Marcie Hutchinson, lecturer of history education in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at ASU, will discuss women in the 1920s and blues singer Bessie Smith’s role as an icon of the New Woman of the ‘20s. Smith’s music and her legacy (Aretha and Janis, to name just two) will be shared with the audience demonstrating the power music has to bring about social change.
Jazz vocalist Kim DeVoss and her group Cool Breeze will perform.
Cindy Ornstein, Mesa Arts Center Executive Director, will discuss the valuable role the arts plays in sustaining our communities.
