noun feminism \ˈfe-mə-ˌni-zəm\
: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
: the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities
The word “feminist” has gotten a bad reputation. When we ask our community if they consider themselves feminists, the answers are pretty split. The reason for this is that the definition of feminism has been muddled by the media and by political agendas. It’s been equated to man-hating, kill-joy, and other negative ideas.
In reality, feminism is just the belief that men and women are equal. And what’s wrong with that?
It’s time for us to own feminism. Call ourselves feminists proudly and openly for equality, and work together - across ethnicities, sexual orientation, religions, etc. - to fight for it.
In these trying times, the notion of intersectional feminism has never been more important: Intersectional feminism recognises that certain groups of people have multi-layered obstacles in life that they have to overcome, such as racism and sexism. There is no one-size-fits-all of feminism. We all need to work together.
