About Thomas Hays
About Thomas Hays Thomas Hays is Managing Director of Emerald Development Group and Founder of Thomas Hays Interiors.
Following a successful career on Wall Street as an investment banker, Mr. Hays capitalized upon his global business acumen, creative skills, and investment know-how to pursue a new career in real estate development and interior design. Mr. Hays’s work has been featured in Elle Décor, Departures, Town & Country, and Culture & Travel, among other major publications. His latest hotel project, Riad Meriem, in Marrakech, Morocco, was selected as one of the top 30 new hotels worldwide for 2008 by Travel & Leisure, and featured as one of the most beautifully designed hotels in the world by House & Garden.
Born in Germany and raised in Louisiana, Mr. Hays earned his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management and began his career as an investment banker for Merrill Lynch and Bankers Trust in New York and London. As a banker, he executed over 300 structured finance deals for clients in Asia, Europe, and Australia. In 1992, he left Wall Street to embark on a new career in real estate development and interior design, first studying at Parsons School of Design and beginning as a residential designer and developer. Among his projects was the design of his home, which received note in the New York Times featuring his notable Asian art collection. In recent years, his business has grown to encompass hospitality design and real estate in both the U.S. and abroad.
Mr. Hays’s design perspective and passion for travel have been influenced by work in over twenty countries. Fluent in three languages, Mr. Hays brings a culturally diverse worldview to his projects and is known for his ability to seamlessly integrate textures, styles, and colors. Also a noted photographer, his portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, taken in some of the most remote parts of the world, are part of private collections worldwide and are frequently requested to be included in his design projects. He and his wife Marlene reside in Manhattan.
