An Evening with Council Member Cori Schumacher
Carlsbad, CA • August 21, 2019
Join Carlsbad City Council Member and former pro surfer, Cori Schumacher, for a discussion about breaking barriers and creating social change!
Wednesday, August 21, 2019 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM PDTHera Hub Carlsbad
5205 Avenida Encinas Suite A
Carlsbad, CA 92008
Before being elected to the Carlsbad City Council in 2016, Cori Schumacher was a three-time Women’s World Longboard Surf Champion who used her platform to work for positive social change around gender disparity, homophobia, the impacts of consumer culture, and other social and environmental issues in surfing. In 2010, she became the first openly gay world surfing champion, working to raise awareness for gay rights in surfing. Shortly after, she spearheaded a successful, international campaign against the hyper-sexualization of elite, female professional surfers.
Council Member Schumacher will discuss her career in professional surfing, her advocacy for important issues, and how she uses these experiences to make our communities better, more equitable places to live and work.
Here is a short documentary film, in which Cori opens up about her upbringing and the often traumatic events that influences her life's work.
"Waves of Disruption: The Cori Schumacher Story" digs into Cori’s difficult past where we find out what drives her actions and activism. Gender disparity awareness, homophobia, the impact of consumer culture on society, sexism, slave labor, and human rights are all given equal billing, challenging the audience to reconsider “traditional” societal and cultural norms that drive our own daily actions.
