Hey there! I'm Fana, a Speaking “Cheerleader” that works with professional women seeking to become more intentional and effective when using their voices. Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?
My favorite experience with Ellevate has been attending the weekly squad meetings. It gave me the opportunity to consistently connect with high-achieving successful women from all around the world. It was more than the average meet and greet when you see someone one time and you never interact with them again. Seeing everyone weekly added another layer of connection. The squad provided a safe container to ask any questions that I had around my business. In addition, I got the opportunity to validate my ideas allowing me to move forward with greater confidence.
How would you define your professional mission?
My mission is to help women who want to move forward in higher leadership roles in their careers but are unable to accomplish this goal because they are held back as a result of their debilitating fear of speaking publicly. I create a safe container and culture for women who work with me to feel held nurtured and heard in a way that enables them to shine their brightest light, unleashing their natural powers through their voices. Giving them the confidence to speak up so that they are able to become natural and effective leaders.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing the joy on women’s faces when they are celebrated by other women after sharing their most vulnerable ideas. When a woman who was once terrified of speaking publicly stands up with confidence in her voice and posture, I am instantly filled with happiness, to see that transformation.
What legacy do you hope to leave through your work?
I believe that any shift towards egalitarianism, in our society can only come through women’s voices. Due to our innate powers to empathize and care for others, when women speak up with clarity and conviction, we can have a lasting impact on how people are treated in society, improving the way in which we all live. As a mother, I hope to help women leaders find their voices and agency in order to speak up in order to go out into the world and create a fair and safer society for us all.
What is it about your job that makes you feel it’s the right fit for you?
My career is a perfect fit for me because I am empathetic, and a natural educator. I have taught at all levels from elementary through to community college additionally, I’ve owned an education learning center. My current business is an extension of what I have done throughout my life. I get to help women become more effective speakers and believe in their own agency, enabling them to be their own advocates and speak up for themselves.
Who are your role models?
My grandfather. He’s the definition of what I consider to be the immigrant story that was able to pursue the American Dream. Moving to the U.S. from Jamaica with little education and was able to purchase a house within 3 years of moving here (while not in the best neighborhood due to redlining), but still created a safe internal space for his family. He worked two jobs for over 40 years and still managed to put children through college, with little knowledge of the American education system. His children and later his grandchildren were able to excel beyond where he started, getting graduate degrees and even moving into neighborhoods that he was previously shut out of. His persistence is an inspiration.
What is your morning ritual?
Wake up at 5:30 meditate for 10 minutes, work out for 30 minutes in my garage. Make a shake for myself and breakfast for my sons. Get my sons ready for school. (At home school during COVID). By 9 am settle around my living room table in order to start my day.
What is your favorite social media site? Why?
My favorite social media app at the moment is Club House. Unlike the other social media apps, Clubhouse is not visual and allows you to participate only via voice in “Rooms’ that can be created by members of the club. It creates an environment for people to connect and listen to people and perspectives that they may not have heard before. You can quietly listen in to what’s happening in each room or you can jump on the “stage” and participate. In one moment, I can be listening to a led meditation, while at the next minute learning about best practices for growing a business and all in between.
What would you say your personal superpower is?
I am intuitive when it comes to my observation of people. The ability to communicate in an uncomplicated clear way enabling people to understand complicated concepts simply.
