Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.

My name is Deepali Vyas and I’m currently the Head of Americas Global Markets Sector and member of the Financial Services Practice at Heidrick & Struggles. I specialize in advising clients on senior front office positions in the global markets arena – both cash and derivatives. With over 15 years of executive search experience, I have an extensive track record completing senior roles across sales, trading and research for clients located in the Americas, EMEA and Asia, primarily hedge funds, investment banks and boutiques. My portfolio of work has included Heads of Trading, Sales, Research, Quantitative Strategies and Electronic Trading Technology. In addition to running the markets sector, I’m also passionate about growing Heidrick & Struggles Diversity Initiative. Creating a focus and commitment to diversity amongst our financial services clients starts with fundamentally embedding these values as part of the culture of the organization. We help our clients with the ABCD’s of talent acquisition through identifying:

A-level candidates – provide “best in class” talent pool

Bench – create a strong bench of next generation talent, with a focus cultivating junior female talent transitioning into leadership positions

Capability – candidates that are not only capable for the role, but also a culture fit

Diversity – provide a diverse slate of candidates to align with the values and mission of our clients

What has been the biggest challenge in your career to date?

Starting my own boutique executive search firm – it was both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. After being in search for 10 years, I decided to venture out on my own and tap into my entrepreneurial spirit. My business, like many others, is based on relationships. Remembering names and backgrounds of people I meet is my business, but making someone feel that they are my number one priority creates a closer and memorable working relationship. My challenge was to make sure both my clients and candidates felt this way about working with me.

What was your biggest career breakthrough moment?

I cannot define my biggest breakthrough in a single moment, as I’m lucky enough to have many breakthrough moments where both my client and candidate feel it’s a perfect match. It is eternally gratifying to make a difference in someone’s career, where this person wakes up every day happy to be in their seat and feel challenged -- and knowing that I was part of that journey is worth everything.

Finish this sentence, "I knew I had "made it" when…"

My name became synonymous with “recruiter” on any given trading desk I called on. The trading floor recognized my name to the point that it was known why I was calling and what I was calling about. The moment I was seen as an advisor to my clients as I brought market intelligence that was interesting and pertinent to the conversation, it was truly career defining.

If you could go back and talk to your younger self (before your career really began), what professional advice would you give her?

Read, read, read! I would tell her to read the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times every single day. The stories you read about in the papers come to life in meetings, and you will be able to go toe-to-toe with global heads of businesses and discuss what’s really important to these leaders. You will be able to have a high level discussion about strategy and trends, and meeting them at a 30,000 foot view vs 100 feet.

Share your two cents about money. What lessons have you learned about money along the way?

My two cents about money is that it will always come to you, if you are focused on results. It isn’t about how many hours in the day you work, but if you are working smarter and achieving results. I’ve been in an unconventional career my entire life, where it was never dependent on how many hours I put in, or how many days I showed up to the office – I could work from virtually any place that had a phone and internet connection. Having said that, I wasn’t working 24 hours – I planned my days and meetings around what I wanted to achieve. When I focused on something, I was able to achieve a positive outcome and part of that result was money.

What is your secret to success?

Remaining firmly grounded in my principles is essential to my success. My entire career, I’ve tried to put myself in the other person’s shoes and figure out what would be their next best career move. It is this very principle that allows me to serve as an advisor, career coach and true guide on their journey for professional and personal success.

Why are you a member of Ellevate?

In the world of finance, women are few and far between – especially in highly visible leadership roles. Sallie Krawchek is one of the few women that has experienced the finance world at the top, and is someone that I’ve always admired. It is a tough circle to break into, and as woman, I face an uphill battle every day, but it’s that very challenge that keeps me going. Knowing that Ellevate is an organization that stands to empower women is the very reason I joined and it’s something I can put my full support behind. I’m looking to Ellevate to network and create friendships with highly energetic, intellectual, entrepreneurial and successful women from every industry. By the same token, I’m looking to give back and help empower women in this network in any way that I can, whether it be career advice or simply discussing topics that any working mom or fellow entrepreneur can relate to.
