Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.
I’m Amy J. Adams, Managing Member of AJA Marketing, LLC. I founded AJA Marketing in 2014, and before then, was a Marketing Director of a prominent New Jersey law firm. AJA Marketing is a dynamic company dedicated to assisting associations, businesses and nonprofits enhance visibility, increase profits, promote customer and member engagement, and improve service quality. My business has been retained to work with the Association of Corporate Counsel, Greater New York Chapter, where I am the Chapter’s Executive Director. The ACC Greater New York Chapter includes more than 1,800 members and promotes the common professional and business interests of in-house counsel. I am focused on growing and engaging the membership, sponsor relationships, event execution, and board member engagement. Most importantly, I’m focusing on being a mom to my two amazing children.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career to date?
I’ve been working since I was 15 years old and have to say I’ve been presented with various challenges throughout my career over the years. In my career, I’ve managed both small and large teams, projects and major events - I even had to arrange a major political event with a last minute emergency of a leaking ceiling! All that being said, my biggest challenge is maintaining that elusive balance. Starting a new business and learning all the things “you don’t know that you don’t know” while raising two young children has shown me that you have to take time for your family and yourself, not just your business.
What was your biggest career breakthrough moment?
Starting my own marketing consulting business and securing a major client right away. I was very thankful that things moved so quickly.
Finish this sentence, "I knew I had "made it" when…"
I think it’s important to have various “Wow, I’ve made it!” moments, and those targets continue to move as I learn and grow both professionally and personally. My most recent moment was when I saw a write-up on my business and myself in a major NJ newspaper. In my mind, there’s still nothing like seeing your name and photo in the press (in a positive way!)
If you could go back and talk to your younger self (before your career really began), what professional advice would you give her?
That would be a rather long conversation - I would tell myself so many things if I only I had a time machine! I’d remind her to eliminate the word “can’t” from her vocabulary, and not to hold herself back. I would remind her to not be afraid of making mistakes, and that she doesn’t need to be perfect. I would tell her to be much kinder to herself, but also let her know that she is capable of so much more than she thinks, and to fully embrace her knowledge and radiate that confidence.
Share your two cents about money. What lessons have you learned about money along the way?
As a business owner, I’ve learned you must invest in your business and yourself - whether it’s an educational conference, an online course, or joining Ellevate - we all need to continue to grow, evolve and learn. I believe it’s crucial to invest in you to achieve optimal growth.
What is your secret to success?
One of my secrets is to never stop learning. Every day is an opportunity to learn more and grow as an individual and a professional. But my real secret weapon is a wicked sense of humor, and most importantly, the ability to laugh at myself!
Why are you a member of Ellevate?
I truly believe in the importance of women supporting other women. Whether you are a mother, daughter, sister, wife or friend - women have so many shared strengths and can relate to each other on an intrinsic level. There are so many fantastic opportunities that Ellevate provides to enrich a woman’s growth and her network, and I’m very proud to be a part of that community
