Sansan Fibri (Fibich)

Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.

My name is Sansan Fibri, I am originally from Israel, now a New-Yorker for 18 years. After 15+ years as a filmmaker, and after I became a finalist for Apple's reality competition series, "Planet of the Apps," I set out to build, fund and launch my startup, DreaMe. DreaMe is the ONLY AI-powered, Jung inspired Dream Interpretation App, a Psychotherapist Matching Platform and a Global Dream Wisdom Bank. We are currently entering a beta-testing phase, after which we intend to go out for seed funding and launch by late summer of 2018.

How would you define your professional mission?

My mission is to help people gain significant self-insight by decoding their dreams in a fun and intuitive process, based on proven Jungian methods of psychology, and to help the medical and scientific community with a global database of dreams. To improve not only the quality of sleep but also the waking lives of millions of people.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful in your line of work?

There is something about being a (first time) startup founder that I liken to my days as a film & TV producer. Every new production is treated as its own company, and the producer's role is to be at the helm. To oversee the "big picture," so to speak, assemble the right team of experts in the various departments, and lead them with tenacity and a cohesive vision.

What is one of your most memorable career accomplishments?

When my first screenplay got picked up to be produced as a feature film to be shot in LA, I was overjoyed. But the moment that most encapsulates my awe was the first day I drove onto the set. As a New-Yorker, I don't get to drive often. I was closely following the GPS as we were shooting on location far away from where the production company had put me up. I finally arrived, still focused on finding the right parking lot. The location was a former boarding school now rented solely for filming purposes, so most of the parking lots were empty. I took one last turn and came to the intended parking lot. When the lot was revealed to my eyes, full to the brim with cars, trucks, filming equipment, lights, rigs, and people (crew) I was to meet for the first time, I stopped my rental car and just sat there, in awe. Here was all this commotion, this lovely madness, this organized chaos that is like music to the ears of a filmmaker... and all this commotion, all these jobs, created by a dream of little ol' me. It was my dream; I put words on paper, pursued with dogged devotion until I found my baby the right home to grow and manifest into the reality of a film. Sure, I felt pride, but even more so, humility.

What are some career challenges on your radar?

As a first time founder of a tech startup, I've already had to face some of the biggest challenges in my professional life. With no education or training in tech, here I am launching a tech-based startup, having to educate myself on a plethora of new terms and operations, determine who is the right developer and team to work with, and make daily decisions about functionality & design. With no formal education in finance or business, here I am building a viable business plan, a financial model, having to make daily decisions on budgeting, fundraising, marketing... And I am loving every minute of these challenging days! Challenge is an opportunity for growth, adversity is an opportunity for triumph.

We’d love to hear more about your career path. What led you to where you are today?

My father was a physicist, my mother was a choreographer. While I was exposed to a healthy mix of creativity on the one side and analytical thinking on the other, I used to think I had to choose one avenue to pursue in life. During the first 30 years of my life, I came to identify strongly with my creative side. I was an actor from an early age, went to an art high school where I majored in dramatic arts and on to world- renown schools in Paris, London, and NYC. When I was nearing my 30s, I became very frustrated with the passivity that seemed an unavoidable characteristic in the life of an actor. There was all this “waiting.” Waiting for the right audition, waiting for the callback, waiting to be cast in a role, any role! For most actors 90% of their acting is done in class, somewhat satisfying the burning desire but not nearly enough for a proactive individual as I. I began writing my first screenplay, as a proactive way to utilize my storytelling talents without having to wait, and as a project I could write myself into. A few years after this film was produced, I organically evolved into the role of a producer. There, I found and honed skills I never realized I had in me and that complement my creative vision: analytical thinking, clear communication, driven negotiation and focus towards executing the goal. It wasn’t until I became a finalist for Apple’s competition reality show “Planet of the Apps” that I fully came to see myself not only as a filmmaker but as an entrepreneur. It was then that I realized that I have not only the vision but also the executing power to make a true and lasting impact in the world.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Finding and working with people who possess different skill sets to my own, accelerates my growth in business and as a human being. I am extremely inspired by the amazing team I’ve assembled. I learn from them and grow with them every day.

What legacy do you hope to leave through your work?

Through my current work, my company DreaMe, I hope to revolutionize the way people dream. I hope to empower people with simple tools with which they may gain significant self-insight and be better informed about themselves. If knowledge is power, then there is no greater power than knowing oneself. Since dreams are a natural occurrence for all, I believe I can help individuals, and society as a whole, make better decisions and lead happier lives.

What is it about your job that makes you feel it’s the right fit for you?

In my life, which has already spanned four continents, I’ve acquired an array of skills that never seemed to be quite a fit, at their entirety, for any other work but the one I now do as a startup founder. I speak four languages, I have an intuitive artistic vision but also an analytical brain, I am what they call a “people’s person” but too independent to commit to a vision not my own, to walk a blazed trail. I can “sell” people on my vision but was terrible at a sales job. Authority always having been a challenge, my leadership skills are clearly better than my following ones. Working for myself, I work the hardest I ever have but instead of feeling like I’m on a “hamster wheel”, I feel I am on the most thrilling ride in Disney-world. For the first time I see these previously perceived unrelated skills, come together into a oneness that is my current work and path. Like stars, to the average eye, seem strewn haphazardly across the sky, I now know I possess the skills to connect the dots and see the map.

Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?

In a recent Ellevate luncheon, I had the honor and pleasure to hear some experiences from an accomplished, diverse, driven group of women. While we couldn't mingle during the luncheon, some ladies got up towards the end to go and speak shortly to women they found interesting or felt a possibility of alignment in professional paths. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw several of the women I most had admiration for, lining up to speak with me! These were all women I "targeted" to approach, and the synergy in the room was extremely ELLEVATE-ing.
