Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.

I'm Dr. Joynicole Martinez, CEO and Founder of The Alchemist Agency. I'm focused on building capacity for executives, boards, and corporations that are purpose-centered. My company accomplishes this through training and development, coaching, grant writing, and organizational design. We aim to provide or match resources to fill gaps and remove blockers to the fulfillment of purpose.

Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?

Within a few days of becoming a member, I went to my first event. I found myself surrounded by professional women who were committed to seeing others succeed. Within the first week, my LinkedIn profile had an increase in views of over 350%. Within the first month, I had a training engagement scheduled. I'm a member because when women decide to practice the art of support and sponsorship, it's powerful!

How would you define your professional mission?

My heart exists where wealth, philanthropy, population health, and shelter intersect. My mission is to build the capacity of people and organizations that operate from the nexus of purpose. I aim to help those who are motivated by humanity's circumstance, whether they are looking to provide innovative technology or digging wells.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful in your line of work?

Resilience. My work requires grant writing and fundraising. You can hear a lot of "no" responses before you are awarded a "yes." Because I'm an entrepreneur, I spend time asking for an opportunity to share my knowledge, skills, and talent. As a woman and a mother, I'm navigating whitewater while juggling hats and responsibilities. You have to be resilient to ask that of yourself.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part is seeing a vision become a reality. Whether it's winning a grant and seeing a program begin to change lives, seeing mixed-income housing built, cheering as a Board of Directors rewrites a vision statement, or an executive has an "Aha!" moment. I have the opportunity to walk with my clients through a journey and seeing them reach a checkpoint or goal fulfills a big part of me.

What is your favorite social media site? Why?

I love Twitter. I enjoy the pace of it. Quick conversations with thousands of people. I've met some of my favorite people through Twitter chats. They give an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of the most experienced and knowledgeable people.

What would you say your personal superpower is?

Listening is my superpower. At some point in my life, I realized I could learn so much more if I spoke less and listened more. Don't get me wrong, I love to talk! Listening is a practice, more than hearing. It requires a stillness and an openness to the message that is absolutely necessary if you're seeking wisdom or knowledge.

What advice would you offer future leading ladies wishing to break into your industry?

Don't start up alone. Entrepreneurship can be isolating. Find people that are in the industry, reach out, ask questions. Network and build a tribe. There is safety in a multitude of counsel, and a wise woman seeks out the wisdom of others.

What is the best career advice you ever received?

Stop thinking about it. I am a planner and can be my own worst critic. I've had to learn to move away from analysis to implementation.

What is one piece of advice you’d offer working moms?

Share your purpose with your children. I have 5 children, ages 2 - 9. They understand the work at varying depths of understanding, but I want their buy-in. When I need to focus on something that may take more time or attention than usual, I'm able to explain it to them. They're more supportive and less frustrated, and at times they are even helpful.
