Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.
My name is Veronica Taylor. I am the Creative Director at a Marketing Agency in Westchester, NY. I’ve been here 18 years and helped grow the business from 2 people to 10 people. Currently my focus at work is to bring more purpose and diversity to the agency. I love that we are a woman owned company and hire a lot of women, but would like to see more diversity among us. I’m also heading the initiative to use our marketing services and expertise to help other organizations that are making an impact on people’s lives. In my spare time, I am a Financial Coach helping others to realize that money is not a math problem, but a behavioral one and if we can change our behavior we can be financially fit and our money can become more powerful tool.
Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?
I’ve been a member since this August and attended about 6 events and numerous Jam Sessions, what I love about Ellevate is not only do you get to meet such inspiring, empowering women, but each event is unique and informative, at the very least come for the food. My favorite event was the “speed-dating” style mentorship event. I got a chance to meet some amazing women and the event was done in such a unique fashion. It wasn’t like the other, what I call “Tupperware” style networking groups, where they are all trying to sell you something. It was far more organic and genuine style of meeting and helping other women.
How would you define your professional mission?
To lead others, not manage others. A leader shows you how to be. A manager tells you what to do.
What project have you worked on that you’re most proud of? Why?
Working with Girls Inc. Westchester on developing their new website, create their first blog and actually teaching the girls how to blog, you know, the whole “teach a girl to fish”, through an on-site workshop.
Who are your role models?
Beyoncé of course! Colin Kaepernick. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Alicia Keys. Ava DuVernay. Prince EA. I could go on all day…
What would you say your personal superpower is?
The ability to remove emotion from a situation and attack the problem as if I weren’t afraid or emotionally involved. Sticking to the facts.
What does success look like to you?
Maintaining my health while keeping my family intact and making a positive impact on those who don’t have the same opportunity as myself or others.
Is work-life balance a problem for you? What is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?
It used to be, I was the woman who wanted to “lie down” not “lean in”. I used to go to all of these events or see all these people and be in awe of how successful they were and wondered how they did it all. I felt like I was drowning in work, husband, house, kids, schoolwork, PTA meetings, etc. to the point where I wanted to write a book titled “NO. You Can’t Have It All”. Then I realized “the secret to having it all, is knowing you already do”. You have to realize that what you have is enough and focus your efforts on the things that are most important to you and be ok with the fact that you can’t be all things at one time. So now I focus on doing thing seasonally, meaning I take chunks of time to focus on something that I really want to improve and other things just may not get my attention at that time. Appreciate what you do have, don’t focus on what you don’t.
What is the best career advice you ever received?
Identify your imposter. Name her. And tell her why she is wrong.
What is one piece of advice you’d offer working moms?
When you find yourself most overwhelmed, that usually means big (great) things are happening.
