Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.

I'm Katie Drew Jensen, Founder & CEO of Awaken the Speaker Within Academy & Retreats. I help successful businesswomen expand their Influence, Impact and Income from stage. I specialize in pulling out the true gifts that we are here to share, getting to the "heart" of the business before we work on the "head" of the business, which is narrowing the niche, crafting the message, building the tribe, filling the funnel, finding the stage and audience and finally selling from stage. I also specialize in helping my clients leverage and scale their businesses so they can enjoy more time freedom and prepare an exit plan.

Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?

I am fairly new to Ellevate so hopeful to create memories in the new year (and will update this then!) I joined because it was highly recommended and, being new to Orange County, in search of ways to grow in my new community, expand my tribe, connect with likeminded successful women.

How would you define your professional mission?

I truly believe our "Mission" is the foundation to any business. The easiest way to describe mine is go In short, my purpose, path and passion is to work with authentic and kind people; to help reawaken their message, uncover their true gifts so that they can expand their Impact, Income and Influence to in-turn serve others.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful in your line of work?

Empathy. Compassion. Great listening skills. It's taken me years on this journey to fully understand that we're just doing our best and that most people truly are good people. With this in mind, it makes me a much better mentor and coach. I honestly like people, have compassion and want them to succeed.

What project have you worked on that you’re most proud of? Why?

I made a huge shift in my 30+ year long career just two years ago when I began my migration from Colorado to California. I had been offering a 12 month coaching program and found that my clients were aching for a faster path. After coaching entrepreneurs who walked in many paths, I gravitated towards those who deeply desired to zoom in on their unique gifts, cultivate and grow these gifts while searching for an easier way to share them. Through this discovery, I founded "Awaken the Speaker Within Academy & Retreats". I am most proud of all the years of work that I poured into both services. My retreat is my baby, as it's four days of total immersion and transformation that truly changes lives. My attendees leave with a renewed sense of self, purpose and passion. In return, I feel they change lives, which makes my purpose and path complete.

We’d love to hear more about your career path. What led you to where you are today?

I've been a serial entrepreneur for over 30 years. During these years I've founded and sold several companies, including a successful chain of medical spas and a private air charter company. While I was successful, I also nearly lost everything during the 2008 recession. Although challenging, it was during this time that I truly learned how to be a surviver and the best lessons were learned during hardship. It was then that I knew I could mentor and coach other entrepreneurs because I learned how to build a safety net, prepare for challenges, create multiple streams of income and handle the hurtles that life throws our way.

What legacy do you hope to leave through your work?

Kindness and compassion. The longer I am in "sales", the less I sell and the more I form relationships. When I am no longer here, I hope my past clients remember that I was authentic and truly caring. I do not sign on clients that I authentically feel I cannot help or desire to work with. I also hope that my children remember my work ethic and know they can do anything they choose in life by working hard, being truthful and honest, and knowing "people before profits" is the secret to success.

What is it about your job that makes you feel it’s the right fit for you?

The short answer is experience. No offense to young business people (I love their enthusiasm and energy) however, it's difficult to know how to coach folks before living life, going through hardships, balancing family and work, and working through struggles and learning through years of experience.

What is your morning ritual?

Gratitude is the foundation. I begin with a cleansing drink, stretches, mediation, yoga and writing in my Gratitude journal. Then a quick walk with my dog, followed by a hot cup of coffee prepares me for the day. When I start my work day, I 'try' to tackle the most dreaded tasks. This can be a challenge but very rewarding.

What is one piece of advice you’d offer working moms?

Guilt is a wasted emotion. I had no choice being a working mom and I still battled daily if I was being my best, giving my kids enough time, providing enough and on & on. Now that they are grown, they tell me how proud they were/are I owned businesses and I have watched them go into the world with the same ambition and drive. We teach our children survival and strength by working. Our example creates their foundation for greatness.
