Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.

I'm Kate Katz. I've spent the last 14 years leading teams to deliver complex and high profile change projects and programs and last year I joined the senior leadership team at Clerestory Consulting.

Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?

I love being part of a community of business women, helping each other to succeed.

How would you define your professional mission?

I love helping companies get better, and that’s rooted in working collaboratively with people within their organization. That moment, when you’re working with a company, and you see the light in people’s eyes shine as they get a “yes – we’re going to make it better here”. That’s the moment I love.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful in your line of work?

Intellectual curiosity, passion, and the desire to do good work.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is coaching and mentoring consultants - I get to lead great people and help them to get even better. Through doing great work for our clients, I get to see people develop and realize their potential. Seeing a Consultant grow into a Senior Consultant, and then to a Manager who can lead a team is fantastic.

What is it about your job that makes you feel it’s the right fit for you?

I love learning, and I love solving problems collaboratively, and I love making a difference. As an external consultant, that’s my job in a nut shell. At Clerestory, the whole company is passionate about helping our clients to operationalize their strategies and create sustainable change. We work collaboratively with our clients to create a sense of ownership that involves the client in the change. I love that I work somewhere where I can be the best version of me.

What is your morning ritual?

It’s different since I had my daughter! I used to get up, have breakfast while reading over my emails and mentally prep for the day, before showering, dressing and heading out. My husband is a stay-at-home-dad, and we’re really lucky that my daughter sleeps in, so now I try and get up and out as quickly as quietly as possible!

What does success look like to you?

I had a realization a few years ago that the one thing I really want is for people who know me to say “Kate Katz? She’s good people”. It sounds pretty simple, but it keeps me focused on doing right, being true to myself, and not putting myself in professional situations that bring out the worst in me.

Is work-life balance a problem for you? What is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?

It can be. Whenever I can, I bike to and from work. It gives me time on my own to think about everything and acts as an emotional pallet-cleanser. I get to be work-Kate at work, and home-Kate at home, and I don’t bring the stress of one to the other.

What advice would you offer future leading ladies wishing to break into your industry?

Don’t be the one who automatically organizes the parties and takes the notes. Most women take on a lot of the ‘mental load’ at home, and by habit, we bring that into the office. Men don’t do that, and they get to focus entirely on the parts of the job that are valued by others. It’s important to be intentional about what you do and make sure you have the energy to put to the things that will help your career.
