Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.
I am Dorcia Carrillo and I am a lawyer, wife, Alzheimer's Association volunteer, best friend, and yogi (in no particular order). In 2016, I left a corporate job to start my own law practice. I focus on providing world class legal and business services to small to midsize tech companies.
Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?
I enjoy all of the Ellevate events but I loved the headshot event at Kenneth Cole in NYC and the Westchester Nordstrom styling event. I am an Ellevate member because another attorney encouraged me to join right after I finished law school. I went to a few events and found it an easy way to network.
What is one of your most memorable career accomplishments?
Every new client I get is a huge accomplishment. And recently a referral source sent me a screenshot of a new client saying how awesome I am, which felt like getting a field goal after a touchdown.
What are some career challenges on your radar?
As a business owner, my biggest challenge is sustainable growth in a crowded industry. There are lots of attorneys and even automated tools from which clients can choose. I have to make sure I deliver a product that consumers value.
We’d love to hear more about your career path. What led you to where you are today?
I was promoted to a management role in my previous employment. As a manager, I realized I had to promote the company's values, something I avoided as an individual contributor. I did not share that company's values, which made being a manager there difficult. I started looking for other opportunities. I knew exactly what I wanted and when I could not find the perfect opportunity, I decided to create it. That is how The Law Office of Dorcia Carrillo was established.
Who are your role models?
My role models are Michelle Obama and Beyonce. Though I am not sure I can even consider Beyonce a role model because she is a deity.
What is your morning ritual?
Mornings are sacred to me. I journal every morning and avoid social media (except LinkedIn) before noon. My best friend also calls me around 8:30 everyday.
What does success look like to you?
Success looks like healthy hair, clear skin, and lots of money.
Is work-life balance a problem for you? What is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?
I don't believe in work-life balance because my work is my life and I love it. Now that I manage my own firm, I have the ability to integrate my professional life into my personal life. For example, I took an extended holiday and did not mind having my laptop with me just in case I needed to handle a client matter. I have also been known to take a call while out for a run.
What is the best career advice you ever received?
A mentor once told me - the client won't always know if you have the best legal argument, but the client will know if you don't file on time.
