Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.

Wendy Samuelson is the managing partner of the boutique matrimonial and family law firm, Samuelson Hause & Samuelson, LLP ( ), based in Garden City, New York. Since graduating from Cornell Law School in 1993, I have confined my practice to counseling high net worth clients to make exceptional business decisions--and not emotional ones-- on how best to resolve their divorce or child custody matter.

Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?

I recently joined Ellevate Network. I went to a party at the home of one of the members of the Long Island chapter, and enjoyed meeting other ambitious businesswomen.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful in your line of work?

As a divorce attorney, you need to be a good listener. Listen to your clients. Ask them questions. Understand what motivates them. The information is extremely valuable to help your clients reach a settlement.

What is one of your most memorable career accomplishments?

I am the author of the column "Recent Legislation, Cases and Trends in Matrimonial Law" for the Family Law Review, the New York State Bar Association's quarterly publication. This publication is considered a "must read" by family law practitioners and judges in New York state.

What are some career challenges on your radar?

The biggest challenge is that I constantly have to bring in new clients. This means I am constantly networking while also running a business.

What project have you worked on that you’re most proud of? Why?

A client of mine was owed several thousands of dollars in child support. Through motion practice and judgment enforcement, I was able to have the sheriff pull the husband's boat out of the water and impound the boat. The husband freaked out, and immediately paid the amount due to my client.

We’d love to hear more about your career path. What led you to where you are today?

My father started the practice 50 years ago. I joined his practice immediately after graduating from law school 25 years ago, and today, I am the managing partner. My father instilled in me the passion of helping people resolve their disputes.

What is your morning ritual?

Two cups of pumpkin spice coffee. 10 minutes of meditation. 20 minutes of spinning.

What would you say your personal superpower is?

My ability to help people stay calm. I teach my clients meditation techniques in order to keep them from spinning out of control emotionally and help them stay focused.

What does success look like to you?

Having a good work life balance. I pride myself on working hard five days/week, and having time on the weekends to focus on other things, like tandem road and mountain biking with my husband.
