Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.
My name is Mijanou Spurdle. I am originally from Brooklyn, NY but have lived in Miami Beach Florida since 2003. I am focused on being a mother, wife and financial professional.
Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?
I have met some wonderful and inspiriting women through Ellevate and have a regular quarterly dinner with a group of the ladies with the mission of holding ourselves and each other accountable for our goals and helping each other stay focused on ourselves as a priority in the midst of all that we do.
What is one of your most memorable career accomplishments?
When I decided to leave a team because I was not being seen as equal by my partner. I stated my intention to my partner, after much deliberation, research about my options and consultation with my superiors. When he stated all the reasons I would not be successful without the team and all the things he felt were deficits in my personality, I stood up and said with full confidence, "That is the way you see it but is not accurate. I wish you all the best and thank you for what I learned from you while we were working together," and I walked out of the room. We are still friends to this day.
I had prepared well for that moment and was completely sure about what I was doing and I practiced my responses to any argument ahead of time. I also consulted my husband who helped me see that I had to "act like a man." I learned that I should never say "I feel," never let anyone put me down, defend my position with full certainty, know that I am right, and stand up with my head held high the entire time.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The long term relationships that I have formed with my clients and their families. I am there when they start and sell businesses, have children and grandchildren, retire, move, realize dreams, do for others and so much more! The commercials are accurate but not every advisor appreciates it or takes their responsibility for others seriously.
Who are your role models?
This is hard to say about one person. My father in his never ending energy and confirmations. He has been through so much in his life and every day reaches for more. He is a cheerleader for all 4 of his daughters. Also my mother-in-law, who started in the brokerage business in 1959 and encouraged me to look at it as an option when I was changing careers and approaching 30 years old. She has encouraged me to do my best, ignore the negative noise and to run a business that represents who I am. She is a great listener when I talk about business.
What is your morning ritual?
I wake up at 5 am, check my calendar, run or walk with my dog. I am home by 5:45 so I can have coffee with my husband, then I do 10 minutes of arms, abs or yoga. Next, if there is time, I review my client accounts' prior day activity, get ready for work, wake my son, take him to school and then it is off to the office!
What would you say your personal superpower is?
Energy! I can sleep very little and have energy to move nonstop all day. I sometimes wonder how I do it!
What does success look like to you?
Happy family, happy clients -- in that order.
Is work-life balance a problem for you? What is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?
Of course! How can anyone say it is not! I try to use scheduling to create balance. I don't check work emails after I come home from work and I put all school and personal events on my calendar and block them from work. I finally figured out last year that if my son is going to be off from school, after 20 years of working in my current job I can take that day off with him and do something fun and relaxing with him and his friends. There will come a time when he is too busy for me so now is not the time to be too busy for him! I also schedule vacations, at least 1, to unplug and be off the grid each year.
What is the best career advice you ever received?
Keep working, do your best, and success will come and you wont necessarily know exactly where it came from.
