Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.
I am a technologist and business strategist focused broadly on commercializing innovations that help change people’s quality of life. Currently, I am a Vice President and member of the Executive team at a Silicon Valley start-up, Applied Silver. At Applied Silver, our mission is to drive forward our collective social responsibility towards more prudent use of antibiotics, and we do so by converting everyday fabrics into germ killers and infection fighter. Armed with a Ph.D. in microbiology and trained in marketing and product strategy, my day-to-day job varies from being the ground-floor scientist to the brand manager.
Tell us about your favorite Ellevate Network memory or success story. Why are you a member?
Being new to Ellevate, I don’t have memories to share as yet. I joined the group to join forces with other successful women. I am a constant learner and nothing gives me more joy than the opportunity to learn from others.
What qualities does it take for someone to be successful in your line of work?
Collaboration, diligence, confidence and quality of work.
We’d love to hear more about your career path. What led you to where you are today?
I started my career in the academic research world. I found myself seeking projects and challenges that had more tangible outcomes. This lead to a few years in the product development space in life sciences. From there, I transitioned into global business roles in a large company to work closer to the customer and really learn how to commercialize products that had a meaningful impact on people. Today, I get to use all the skills I have developed at my startup, which gives me immense pleasure.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I work with really smart, innovative people to solve a global challenge. It is a great feeling to know that every one of us has the ability to change the world.
What legacy do you hope to leave through your work?
Build through collaboration. We are in this together.
What is your morning ritual?
I always start my morning with a cup of tea with my husband. We chat about the day, get input from each other for our meetings at work while we work alongside to get breakfast on the table for our two children before we wake them up.
Is work-life balance a problem for you? What is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?
Balance is a tricky term…. go with the flow and give yourself some grace.
What is the best career advice you ever received?
You are better than you think you are. Believe in yourself and others will come along in the process.
What is one piece of advice you’d offer working moms?
Your family is your biggest gift. And they will be your proudest cheerleaders when you achieve career success.
