2050 Trailblazers Podcast | Becoming Intentional on the Road to Allyship

2050 Trailblazers Podcast | Becoming Intentional on the Road to Allyship

In December 2018, I was interviewed, along with Lazetta Braxton CFP®, by Rianka Dorsainvil, CFP®, on her groundbreaking podcast, Trailblazers 2050. Unlike most of my media interviews, I was not the subject matter expert. I was just Kathleen, trying to learn more about being a good ally to my colleagues of color. This experience showed me how much I have grown in the last five years, and how I can continue to explore issues of race, color, and diversity personally and professionally.

Be intentional and speak up. During the podcast, I discovered simple ways to be an ally. From speaking up when I see a conference schedule that is full of white male experts and lacks gender and racial diversity to gently noticing when colleagues say something racially insensitive. Turns out my intentionality matters. Lazetta and Rianka had noticed this trait, and what I took for granted was appreciated and celebrated by them.

As someone who wrote the book, Breaking Money Silence®, speaking up about taboos topics is definitely in my sweet spot. This year I plan to use my platform to continue the conversation about diversity, continue to be intentional in my work around gender and racial inclusivity, and be more financially compassionate.
