Ellevate Network Houston Chapter Celebrates 5th Anniversary by Hosting Luncheon Focused on Gender Pay Gap

The Houston chapter of Ellevate Network, the nation’s leading community for professional women, celebrates its 5th Anniversary on October 3rd with a special event to discuss the gender pay gap. The event will consist of a luncheon featuring guest speakers Jamille Bigio, senior fellow in the Women and Foreign Policy program at the Council on Foreign Relations and Giselle Greenwood, editor-in-chief of Houston Business Journal.

Recent studies from numerous publications reveal the extreme gap between men and women in the workforce. In the United States alone, white women are paid about 20% less than their male co-workers, with the gap increasing for women of color. Specifically speaking, this year’s Black Women’s Equal Pay Day fell on August 22nd meaning black women had to work an extra 8 months and 22 days to match what their male colleagues made in one year.

“The gender pay gap is an issue that affects every company,” said Ellevate Houston Chapter Co-President Mariam Jacob. “The most modest of movements toward identifying and solving challenges that women face in managing their careers, will give your company an advantage over the competition. It will help you to recruit and retain some of the best female talent, position your company to maximize both male and female employees' contributions, and provide a boost in your company's status over the competition.”

Ellevate Network, a certified B Corporation and Women Owned Business, strives to provide professional women with opportunities to get ahead in their careers. Members of the Ellevate community can use the company’s innovative platform and events hosted by the more than 40 regional chapters around the world as a way to connect with their peers for advice, referrals, and connections to a multitude of business opportunities.

Ellevate Network’s Director of Corporate Partnerships, Allison Matejczyk will be attending the October event. She said, “I’m inspired by the passionate women of Ellevate Houston and their commitment to supporting each other through mentoring, business development, and leadership development. At Ellevate, we believe everyone deserves to have a career they love; everyone deserves to get paid what their worth and equally for that work. I’m excited to have this very important discussion in Houston and provide the local community with the knowledge to succeed.”

The anniversary luncheon will be held at the InterContinental Hotel in Houston, Texas on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 11:30 am CT.

About Ellevate Network
Ellevate Network is a community of women at work committed to elevating each other through education, inspiration, and opportunity. We believe that when ambitious women get more opportunity — to have a voice in important conversations, to have a seat at the table where decisions are made, to steer our collective economic power towards that which we care about — it ultimately benefits everyone, and leads to a more equal world. We do this by providing these women with a community to lean on and learn from. Ellevate Network also works with companies committed to gender diversity and has a proven track record of changing business culture from the inside out.
